Pros of Embroidery

Durability: When it comes to durability, embroidered designs have the upper hand. They outlast printed designs and resist fading or peeling over time.

Professionalism: Transitioning to the aesthetic aspect, embroidery lends a polished and professional appearance to products. This makes it the perfect choice for corporate clothing or uniforms.

Versatility: Another advantage is embroidery’s versatility. It adapts well to various fabrics and surfaces, encompassing clothing, hats, bags, and more.

Personalisation: Embroidery shines when it comes to personalising products. It’s an excellent choice for special events like weddings or fundraisers, where a personal touch makes a significant difference.

Flexibility in Turnaround Time: Since embroidery can be done on an already manufactured product, it offers more flexibility in lead times compared to a branded product made from scratch.

Cons of Embroidery

Cost: When considering cost, digital printing or woven towels may be a more cost-effective solution for larger quantities, provided the lead time allows.

Limited Colour Options: One downside of embroidery is the limitation in colour options. You’re restricted to the available thread colours, while digital printing allows for a full colour spectrum.

Fabric Limitations: Certain fabrics, such as sheer or stretchy materials, are not compatible with embroidery. This can limit the types of products you can customise.

Difficulty with Fine Details: Lastly, embroidery may not be the best option for intricate designs. When the design becomes too detailed, the stitching can become fine and hard to discern.

Q: What is machine embroidery?

Machine embroidery is a process that uses an embroidery machine to stitch a design, logo, or pattern onto a fabric or garment. At Duncan Stewart, we use single-head and multiheaded HappyJapan Embroidery Machines. These are designed for commercial use.

Q: What types of items can be embroidered?

Apparel, towels, robes, hats, bags, and other textiles.

Q: What are the advantages of machine embroidery?

Machine embroidery offers many advantages, including high speed, accuracy, consistency, and the ability to produce custom designs and logos.

Q: What file formats are compatible with embroidery machines?

Embroidery machines use specific file formats such as .dst, .exp, .pes, and .jef. These file formats can be created using specialised embroidery software or by converting other file formats into the appropriate embroidery file format. Our team works with experienced design companies to convert our customer’s designs and/or logos to appropriate files. There is a one-off cost involved in this process, but we can resize in-house and share files with our customers for their future use.

Q: What is the difference between machine embroidery and hand embroidery?

Machine embroidery is done using an embroidery machine to create designs, while hand embroidery is done manually using a needle and thread. Machine embroidery is faster, more consistent, and suitable for large-scale production. Our team in production can scale to turn around thousands of units per day if needed, to deliver fast turnaround to our customers.

Q: What is the cost of machine embroidery?

The cost of machine embroidery depends on various factors, such as the size and complexity of the design, the type of item being embroidered, and the number of items being produced. It is recommended to get a quote from a machine embroidery service provider to determine the exact cost.

Q: Is machine embroidery durable?

Yes, machine embroidery is durable and can withstand regular wear and tear. The thread used in machine embroidery is typically made of high-quality materials that are resistant to fading and fraying.

Q: Can machine embroidery be done on uneven or curved surfaces?

Machine embroidery can be done on uneven or curved surfaces using specialised hoops or frames that hold the fabric or item in place while it is being embroidered. We have equipment for caps, but we can discuss your unique product needs too.

Q: I want my brand colours to be used. Can you achieve a Pantone match?

Embroidery machines use thread that is prepared. We source our thread via Madeira, a leading supplier in the UK of threads. We stock a wide range of colours in-house and for our trade customers can review Pantone matches, but embroidery threads are pre-dyed so sometimes the Pantone match might be a few shades off from your brand colours.
